Behavioral Health Crisis

The mental health and addiction crises—along with the opioid epidemic—have been taking their toll on Pinellas families and patients for years, well before we felt the impacts of a pandemic. Now more than ever, it’s imperative that we reform access to care for mental illness and substance abuse and renew prevention efforts. Every day, Kathleen works with community partners to streamline access to treatment and enhance community education.

Public Safety

Public safety is the core function of government at all levels, and must be at the forefront of every decision made by elected leaders. Our law enforcement community must know that they have our support and gratitude. Kathleen strongly supports providing the resources that our law enforcement officers, firefighters and EMS professionals need to perform their jobs to the best of their abilities.

Low Taxes

Commissioner Peters believes in keeping taxes low while performing the core functions of government. Kathleen was the only Pinellas County Commissioner to oppose raising taxes on residents in 2021—a year where the COVID-19 pandemic caused unemployment and suffering in businesses and families. She also opposes the proposed increased gas tax in Pinellas.

Infrastructure

Communities cannot grow and thrive without sound infrastructure, and this is one of the most critical roles of local government. As a County Commissioner, Kathleen has been a vocal advocate for upgrading all of our wastewater and stormwater treatment facilities. As Pinellas County’s representative on the Tampa Bay Water Board of Directors, Kathleen fights for our consumers by protecting water sources, ensuring oversight for water treatment, and strategic planning.

Conservation & Environment

As Pinellas County continues to grow in population, we must balance the needs of our community with the preservation of its natural green space.  As a Commissioner, Kathleen has supported conservation projects to preserve our beautiful County. As a State Representative, Kathleen led the charge to enforce stricter reporting requirements on cities and organizations who dump raw sewage in the community. When the City of St. Petersburg dumped tens of millions of gallons of raw sewage, she demanded a Fish & Wildlife investigation into the damage. Kathleen sponsored the Fracking Ban legislation in the Florida House and has been a strong advocate for banning off-shore drilling to protect Florida’s coastline and tourism industry.
